| | | Teacher Stephanie Harris Rapes StudentsSearch warrants reveal investigators searched Christiansburg High School for any and all documents, letters, files, disciplinary actions and complaints made in reference to Diana Canter between August 2008 through June 2009. Police say the alleged incidents happened between December 2008 and August 2009. A spokesperson for the Montgomery County School System says it had no comment on the search at the high school. News 7 talked to several students at Christiansburg High School. They are shocked by the allegations. Morgan Sisson is a sophomore. She said "I was really shocked because she seemed like a cool teacher. I had her as a substitute one time. She just seem really nice, sweet, and cool."
If Canter is convicted, she could face up to 40 years in prison. She could also lose her teaching license in Virginia. The Department of Education says in the last ten years, about 150 teachers have lost their license. Most were teachers who had inappropriate sexual contact with a student.
In 2008, the General Assembly passed a number of new laws dealing with these types of cases. School systems are now required to have policies on how to handle teachers who have inappropriate sexual contact with a student. If a teacher is convicted, school systems must report that to the state board of education for a licensure action. School divisions in Virginia can also no longer hire someone if they have been convicted of having sex with a student. When asked if the laws are working, Department of Education spokesperson told News 7 "no law is going to prevent someone from doing something stupid in all cases." |
