The armed forces accepted trained military Women between 1973 and 1990. The decision to accept women in the armed forces was taken primarily because of pressures from the nomenclature who wanted to push their protegees into well paid positions. These women were not able to achieve high rank since they were not allowed to pursue higher military education (e.g., the Military Academy). Since 1990, this system has lapsed. The army does, however, accept women for professional training in non-military positions depending on institutional needs.

As women were never promoted to command positions, there were significant numbers of drop-outs. Some decided to pursue their professional careers outside the army, while others quit to become housewives. The remainder, the majority, now work in low level management, as secretaries or accountants. At present there are 1600 women on active duty in the armed forces, of whom 950 are officers. They represent 2.4 percent of all military personnel in Romania.
